Time of Winter
Artist Statement

“Time of Winter" is a one-minute animation that captures the ephemeral nature of time and its ceaseless passage. Through the evocative portrayal of a winter setting, the animation subtly reminds us of the transient beauty and relentless progression of our lives.

As the animation unfolds, viewers are transported to a balcony of winter tranquility. A young boy emerges, drawing back the curtains, he carefully hangs a calendar, a symbol of the human desire to mark the passing of time.

Each day, the pages of the calendar flip, and with each flip we witness the subtle metamorphosis of the season. Vibrant leaves, once adorned with hues of crimson and gold, gently detach from branches and descend, mirroring the descent of time itself. The pristine snowflakes that follow, like tiny temporal fragments, blanket the scene, symbolising the ever-present cycle of renewal and transformation.

Through its imagery and nuanced symbolism, "Time of Winter" invites contemplation on the nature of time and the impermanence of existence. This work celebrates the beauty found in the transitory, urging us to embrace the fleeting moments that shape our lives.

About Florence Lee

Florence Yuk-ki Lee (b. 1994, Hong Kong) is an artist and animation filmmaker. Her artistic practice encompasses various mediums, including independent animation, installation, drawing, and art publishing. She is also the co-founder of No Reason Studio. Through her work, Lee assembles and stages ephemeral bodies, personal stories, and poetic visual metaphors, unearthing ideas and inspirations from her daily encounters in Hong Kong—the city where she grew up—to investigate the multilayered connection between herself and her cultural identity. Her animation works comprise digitally hand-drawn frames that flow seamlessly from one to another, evoking numerous micro-narratives summoned from her personal memories, experiences and social shifts. Lee’s emotionally charged work extracts the poetic from the mundane, exploring the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Lee obtained her BA in Graphic Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in 2016 and her MFA in Creative Media from the City University of Hong Kong in 2021. Her works have been shown at various festivals and art venues, including Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France (2022 & 2023), Animafest Zagreb in Croatia (2022), and Fantoche International Animation Film Festival in Switzerland (2022). She has held the solo exhibition ‘Broken heart pieces disco ball’, (MOU Projects, 2023). Her notable animation works include “Park Voyage, 2022” (Commissioned by M+ Museum, Hong Kong) and “Elephant in Castle, 2021” (Graduation Film).
