"The Local Dragon Quest" Dragon and Phoenix Grand Hall was personally crafted from scratch by veteran woodcarver Master Siu Ping Keung. He meticulously carved the wood, applied lacquer, and gilded the piece, creating a magnificent and auspicious representation of the dragon and phoenix, symbolizing harmony and prosperity.
To prevent the contraction and cracking of the wood due to excessive air conditioning in Hong Kong restaurants, local woodcarvers use multiple layers of plywood. Additionally, they carefully craft dragon and phoenix eyes that appear to "blink" and incorporate "starters" in the lighting system to create a dynamic and lively effect. This attention to detail gives the Hong Kong-style Dragon and Phoenix Grand Hall a distinct and vibrant character. Eventually, this craftsmanship gained international recognition, leading to overseas restaurants hiring Hong Kong artisans to create their own dragon and phoenix grand halls. Master Siu's business expanded to Western Europe, North America, and even as far as South America and Rwanda in Africa. However, with the rise of hotel wedding banquets in the new millennium, the popularity of dragon and phoenix grand halls diminished. Nevertheless, establishments featuring woodcarved dragon and phoenix designs remain rare and highly sought after.
Apart from the intricately replicated dragon and phoenix carvings crafted by Master Siu, the exhibition also showcases his precious collection, including dragon carvings made for the Hong Kong Ocean Park's Ancient Village and architectural drafts of dragon and phoenix grand halls.
We sincerely invite Master Siu Ping Keung to come to GATE33 Gallery to give a cultural and craftsmanship sharing session on dragon and phoenix wood carving. Welcome to sign up and participate!
